I made it my goal in 2017 to listen to 52 classic albums from before I was born, each week, and I summarised my thoughts in a 3 hour show on my student radio station Forge Radio.
The project came from a feeling that I had a lack of knowledge of older music. It began as something personal, just a list of albums I wanted to listen to, but it slowly grew into a number of my friends & family following along, and to close the project, I knew I wanted to put my thoughts into words, and decided to put together this 3 hour show to showcase the music discovered along the journey.
As a hobby, I’ve been putting together these mixtapes on Mixcloud each season to collect some of my favourite music from recent months.
Unfortunately due to the recent Mixcloud rule changes, only a few can be found, however the latest Mixtape comes from Autumn of 2022.
I spent 4 years on Sheffield’s student radio station Forge Radio. I developed a weekly show consisting of the previous week’s new releases, that became award winning at Demo Factor 2019. I also recorded ‘Specials’, two of which I’ve included in the demo.
To give context to the demo here’s a breakdown:
- Big Weekend After-Party: After travelling to R1’s Big Weekend, I brought the atmosphere on-air, celebrating some of the best artists kicking off the festival season.
- 'Finlay on Forge': My regular show, playing all my favourite releases from the last week.
- 52-Album Project: In 2017, I realised that the artists I loved so much, were all inspired by a completely unknown world of music from before I was born. So I made a list and a 2018 new year’s resolution: Listen to 52 classic albums, week-by-week. It was a really exciting project, and to bookend the whole thing I spent 3-hours live reviewing each album and playing a few of my favourites.
